The body that provides legal assistance to Brazilians who cannot afford a lawyer, the Public Defender's Office, will have an exclusive credit line. In an unprecedented initiative by the federal government, R$ million will be made available in loans by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) to equip, modernize and strengthen the states' public defender offices. The measure was proposed by the Judiciary Reform Secretariat, of the Ministry of Justice, and approved by the National Monetary Council this Thursday (/).
The objective is to remedy difficulties highlighted in the III BTC Number Data Diagnosis of the Public Defender's Office in Brazil, a study launched in by the Ministry of Justice. The survey showed, for example, that, of the Public Defender's Office's total budget, only % is for investments, such as purchasing computers and modernization.
Actions will be financed to modernize management (implementation of a process monitoring system), development and improvement of information systems and services (electronic service), computerization, training and improvement of servers, in addition to carrying out studies and consultancies. One of the focuses will be the implementation of electronic process monitoring. The method allows, for example, monitoring the execution of the sentence so that the individual does not remain in prison after completing the sentence, which currently happens due to the fact that the procedural procedures are not computerized.
The Judiciary Reform Secretariat will discuss together with BNDES the criteria for dividing resources. In October, a cooperation agreement will be signed between the Ministry of Justice, BNDES and the National Council of General Public Defenders (Condege) to formalize the joint efforts to strengthen the Public Defender's Office of the States and make borrowing viable. With information from the Communications Office of the Ministry of Justice.
